If you're in Toronto, grab a coffee and show your support for US war resisters before work on Tuesday.
This Tuesday morning, February 10, we will rally outside the federal court where Jeremy Hinzman's appeal will be heard. It's an important opportunity to protest another potential deportation, and to reaffirm Canadian democracy.
If your schedule permits, drop by for an hour or so. I'll be there, and I'll also attend the hearing. I've never done that before, so I'm looking forward to it.
The war resisters' court cases have taken on new urgency, as appeals for stays of deportation have been denied, and resisters have been deported.
The House of Commons voted to stop the deportations and allow war resisters to stay in Canada - but Robin Long and Cliff Cornell are now in jail because the Harper minority government refused to respect democracy. Other war resisters and their families face similar punishment for doing what Canada did: rejecting the illegal Iraq war.
In April 2005, then Opposition Leader Stephen Harper said, "The Prime Minister has the moral responsibility to respect the will of the House." It is time - past time - long past time - for Stephen Harper to respect Parliament and let war resisters stay.
When: Tuesday, February 10, 8:30 a.m.
Where: Outside the Federal Court, 180 Queen St. West, Toronto (west of University Ave, Osgoode subway)
Why: LET THEM STAY
